The most common mistake a new trainer makes is giving a child mixed problems from day one. The soroban is not taught that way. It is a ladder: each rung opens the next, and skipping one produces a child who secretly counts on their fingers because the ground beneath was never solid.
Here the child learns that each lower bead is one and the upper bead is five. They add and subtract by moving beads directly, with no helper rule. For example, 3 + 1 means moving one lower bead. The goal at this stage is not speed but a stable image — seeing the number on the abacus instantly, without counting.
The real difficulty starts when the child wants to add 4 + 3 and the lower beads run out. Now they learn the rule: add five and subtract the difference. 4 + 3 becomes 4 + 5 − 2. This is the first genuine mental leap, which is why it needs heavy practice before moving on.
Then comes what cannot be solved inside one column: 8 + 7. The child learns to borrow from the neighbouring column — add one to the tens and subtract the complement from the units. This stage separates a child who knows the soroban from one who has mastered it, because it requires holding two columns in view at once.
In traditional practice a problem is all additions, then all subtractions. The trouble is that the child learns a pattern rather than a skill. Mixed problems scatter addition and subtraction inside a single problem, forcing the child to identify the operation at every step — and that is the skill competitions and real life actually ask for.
